Grand Rapids, Michigan, is one of the Midwest’s most underrated gems for families. Packed with interactive museums, animal adventures, botanical beauty, and amazing local eats, it’s the perfect place to entertain curious kids of all ages. In this blog, I’m sharing the best family-friendly things to do in Grand Rapids, where to eat with kids, and a luxurious downtown hotel we loved that’s close to everything!

Before I proceed , A huge thanks to ‘Experience Grand Rapids‘ for hosting my family for this Blog but all the opinions are my own.

1. Grand Rapids Children’s Museum

This museum was a hit with our kids from the moment we walked in! Every inch is designed for little hands and curious minds. Kids can build towering structures in the LEGO zone, shop and cook in a mini-market, or play dentist in the “Little GR” neighborhood exhibit. The bubble room was a huge hit not just with kids but even with us adults! They also have rotating STEM and art exhibits that change throughout the year, so there’s always something new to explore. It’s a great mix of play and learning that keeps kids engaged for hours.

Address: 11 Sheldon Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503
Tickets: Around $10 per person; free for kids under 1

2. Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum

History came alive for all of us at this beautifully curated museum. While adults can dive into exhibits about President Ford’s life and legacy, younger visitors will love the interactive displays. There’s a replica Oval Office where kids can pretend to be president, and even an Air Force One exhibit that makes you feel like you’re stepping onto the real thing. Educational films and multimedia displays help explain big ideas in simple, engaging ways for school-age kids. It’s a wonderful stop to mix history and fun.

Address: 303 Pearl St NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504
Tickets: $12 adults, children 18 & under are free

3. John Ball Zoo

Located just minutes from downtown, this zoo exceeded our expectations! We saw everything from red pandas and grizzly bears to penguins and chimpanzees. Kids loved the hands-on animal encounters like petting goats, feeding birds, and brushing miniature donkeys and also riding a camel. One of the coolest features was the funicular that gives you a ride to the top of the hill so you can stroll down past habitats at your own pace. There’s also a ropes course and zip line for adventurous kids (and parents).

Address: 1300 Fulton St W, Grand Rapids, MI 49504
Tickets: Adults $18, Kids (3-12) $15, Under 3 Free

4.Grand Rapids Public Museum

The Grand Rapids Public Museum is a fun and educational stop for families, especially if you’re traveling with curious kids. One of the most fascinating parts of the museum is the Streets of Old Grand Rapids, a full-scale re-creation of what the city looked like in the 1890s. Kids can walk through vintage storefronts, peek inside old shops, and truly feel like they’ve stepped back in time. It’s an interactive way for children to learn about history while having fun exploring life from over a century ago

  • General Admission : Adults : $12 & kids $5

5. Deer Tracks Junction Safari Drive-Thru

This was like a mini African safari right in Michigan! You stay in your car and drive through a landscape where animals like elk, bison, camels, and deer roam freely. Some even walk right up to your window! The kids squealed in delight every time an animal came close, and it was a great way to learn about wildlife in a safe and exciting environment. They also have a walk-through area and petting farm, making it a full-day adventure for animal lovers.

Address: 7850 14 Mile Rd NE, Cedar Springs, MI 49319 (about 30 mins from GR)

6. Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

This was hands-down one of the most beautiful places we visited! The outdoor gardens are vast and themed . Our favorite was the Japanese gardens, wetlands, and a children’s garden with a treehouse, musical instruments, and a splash pad. Inside, you’ll find a lush tropical conservatory full of butterflies, waterfalls, and exotic plants. There are also over 200 sculptures throughout the property, including giant works by artists like Chihuly and Rodin. It’s peaceful, playful, and packed with opportunities for learning through nature and art.
