Smart enables Video Calls without the need for apps powered by Video Over LTE

PLDT wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has announced the rollout of Video Calls powered by Video Over LTE (ViLTE), allowing Smart and TNT subscribers with ViLTE-compatible devices to make video calls without needing a third-party app.

With ViLTE, subscribers can make high-quality video calls as easily as dialing a regular voice call, making conversations with loved ones closer, simpler, smoother, and more personal.

ViLTE video calls are billed to the caller’s voice subscription, meaning subscribers with active unlimited call offers—such as Unli 5G+ or PowerAll for Smart customers or SurfSaya for TNT users—can enjoy virtually unlimited video calls effortlessly. Like regular calls, the recipient doesn’t need to have an active offer, as long as the caller does.

ViLTE (Video over LTE) not only provides high-quality video calls, but also maintains stable connections in densely populated areas by using dedicated LTE resources for video transmission. Its network-level integration results in improved battery efficiency compared to app-based video calling solutions. Furthermore, ViLTE supports multitasking, allowing subscribers to browse the internet, stream content, or run other applications concurrently with a video call, enhancing the overall user experience.

A clearer and more immersive way to connect

The recent launch of Video Calls powered by ViLTE (Video over LTE) builds upon Smart’s significant achievement of being the first telecommunications company in the Philippines to introduce Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services for both prepaid and postpaid customers in 2020. VoLTE technology allows users to make high-definition voice calls directly over the LTE network, ensuring clearer audio quality and the ability to use mobile data simultaneously during calls. Now, with ViLTE, customers can make high-quality, real-time video calls natively from their device’s dialer without needing a third-party app, provided both parties are using ViLTE-compatible devices and are within LTE coverage.

Smart is also continuously expanding its advanced 4G and 5G network infrastructure nationwide. This expansion aims to enhance user experience by delivering ultra-low latency, which is critical for seamless and uninterrupted video calls, smooth live streaming, immersive mobile gaming, and other data-intensive activities. These advancements highlight Smart’s commitment to providing superior connectivity solutions and supporting the country’s growing demand for digital services.

“Our sustained network investments enable us to stay true to Smart’s DNA of democratizing the most advanced mobile experiences and making the latest innovations accessible to more Filipinos. With ViLTE, we are enhancing everyday communication by empowering our customers with a clearer and more immersive way to connect,” said Lloyd R. Manaloto, FVP at Smart.

How to enjoy Video Calls powered by ViLTE

To activate ViLTE, Smart and TNT subscribers must first ensure that VoLTE is enabled on their Android device by following these steps:

  1. Go to Settings and choose Mobile or Cellular Network
  2. Enable VoLTE / HD Voice
  3. Toggle ViLTE / Video over LTE / Video Calling to ON

To enjoy ViLTE (Video over LTE) calls, both you and the person you are calling must have smartphones that support and have enabled both VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and ViLTE. Additionally, both parties should be within Smart’s LTE or 5G network coverage to use these features outside of WiFi. ViLTE provides high-quality video calls directly over the cellular network, with no need for separate video call apps.

You can also make ViLTE calls using a WiFi connection if you are in an area with strong WiFi signal. For optimal performance and compatibility, Smart recommends updating your Android device to the latest software version. Popular brands with VoLTE and ViLTE-capable models include Samsung, Huawei, OPPO, ZTE, Infinix, Itel, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi.

Benefits of ViLTE include seamless integration with your phone’s dialer app, improved video and audio quality compared to traditional video calling apps, and no need to use third-party services. Note that applicable data charges may apply when using LTE/5G networks.
