Mature Flâneur – Slow Travel In New Zealand

As a Baby Boomer Travel, Health & Wellness Blogger and avid reader, I’ve included a book reviews segment to my blog. My most recent read is the featured author’s latest publication called;

Mature Flâneur In New Zealand

Traveling to New Zealand is definitely on our “Bucket List”, of {Must Travel To} International destinations.

I was delighted to receive an email in my inbox from CollectiveInk Books, with an invitation to read and to offer a personal review of this new publication.

About Author Tim Ward

Author Tim Ward

Tim Ward has authored eleven books that include various Mature Flâneur destinations and other exciting publications. Six of his books are about his travels through Asia, Europe and Africa.

Tim is the publisher of Changemakers Books and also a teacher. He co-owns Intermedia Communications Training with his wife and business partner Teresa Erickson.

They teach scientists, economists and development experts how to communicate effectively. The two are also established digital nomads traveling full time, along with continuing to teach and publish part time.

Flâneur – Definition

When I first saw the title of the book, it sparked my curiosity. What does the word Flâneur mean, and what does it have to do with New Zealand?

So, the first thing I did and like most of us using the internet, I did a Google search. Here’s what the Cambridge Dictionary’s definition revealed …

flâneur (also flaneur) * someone who walks around not doing anything in particular but watching people and society: *She wanders around with her camera, a flâneur with a keen eye. *Lisbon is a city built for the ultra-relaxed, aimless flaneur.

So I asked myself, why would an expat traveler walk around and not do anything? I knew I had to read this book and find out more!

Turns out, it’s another expression for experiencing …“Slow Travel.”

Tim and his wife embark on a {slow travel} approach to visiting New Zealand. They allowed themselves 3 months to experience the real New Zealand, taking their time and stepping out of the box, visiting many places tourists would not normally go, with a limited vacation time.

Tim and Teresa take you along with them, on their road trip adventure throughout New Zealand.

Tim offers a bit of humor along the way, as they trek through the countryside in the off season. From visiting the cities to small towns, he covers in detail the history behind each place visited and the people they come in contact with.

It really gives you a deep look into the country’s heritage and settlers from centuries past. From the gold rush days, whaling industry impact, the Indigenous Maori Polynesian settlers’ treatment, to near extinction of many plants and animals, Tim covers everything in detail.

Let’s not forget the volcanic eruptions and devastating earthquakes this country has experienced and moved on from.

His book is a wonderful introduction to New Zealand’s present and past. It will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation for its people and what they have endured over the centuries.

There are some amazing out of the way places to visit, that one would normally not know about, unless you’ve read the Mature Flâneur and wish to experience Slow Travel yourself.

I know my and I are at the stage in our lives where we also enjoy taking more time to experience the local culture, customs and history of its people, when travelling to new destinations.

It offers a much greater overall travel experience

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I know you will too. I look forward to reading his other Mature Flaneur adventures he has published on Slow Travel through Portugal, France, Italy and Norway, and future slow travel world experiences.
