Science Confirms What Travelers Already Know

We all chase happiness – sometimes in big gestures, other times in small escapes. Now science has a simple answer: immerse yourself in real-world experiences.

And with this, you see why on my site – a travel blog – there is an article about boosting happiness.

We all want to be happy – and happiness means different things to different people.

But it seems that there are things we can ALL do – NOW – to boost our joy!

Boost Your Happiness: Study Reveals the Key to Well-Being

An Australian study by UniSA and Flinders University reveals that attending live events – festivals, concerts, local markets, exhibitions, sports, food events – creates measurable improvements in well-being. Over 350 participants reported greater joy, excitement, and life satisfaction after these events.

“Previous studies have shown that higher levels of wellbeing can lead to a reduced risk of illness and injury and increase longevity. People with high levels of wellbeing tend to perform better in the workplace and contribute positively to their community, so it’s important not only for public health but also for building strong socially sustainable and connected communities.”,” says Associate Professor Sunny Son.

The findings of this study can be implemented now by anyone. You do not have to travel to interact with people or go to a concert. But what I want to show you in this article is that each trip can be even more beneficial for you, in ways you may not even have considered before!

Why Live Experiences Beat Screens Every Time

Scrolling travel TikToks or YouTube videos may entertain, but being there – hearing the music, feeling the energy of a crowd, interacting with people – is scientifically proven to make us happier. Researchers highlight three key drivers:

  • Shared energy sparks connection – Human interaction elevates mood.
  • Presence creates flow – That state where worries disappear, and joy takes over.
  • Attending events leads to “positive emotions, such as joy, happiness and excitement”

What This Means for Travelers

I wrote in the past about another study which showed that people who go to museums, theatre, concerts, etc live longer.

And if you are familiar with the content from my blog, you know that I love visiting famous attractions, but I always encourage interacting with locals in whatever way possible.

It seems that what I (and many others) do instinctively is a key to being happy! And I for one am happy that there are such studies – because well-being is important for every person, children and adults alike!

Turn Your Trips Into Joy Engines

Boost Your Happiness: Study Reveals the Key to Well-Being. How to boost happiness

So how can you use your trips/vacations to boost your happiness? (and yes, I know that going on a vacation by itself is a mood-booster – as other studies showed – but I am referring to ways to make the trips even more beneficial)

1. Plan Around Local Events

Check city calendars for food fairs, parades, or music nights before booking flights. Or just wander a bit in the city and you may stumble upon something interesting (as we did when we were in Vienna and found a festival near the Danube)

2. Shop and Savor at Markets

Markets are “joy hotspots,” combining culture, flavors, and social interaction. But yes, make sure you interact with people.

3. Learn by Doing

Join workshops – cooking, pottery, dance. These create lasting memories and meaningful connections. And they can be nice, fun, new things to try – especially if this was a New Year’s Resolution.

4. Say Yes to Spontaneity

Leave room for the unexpected: a street band, a local festival, a sunset beach gathering. You may find out about interesting happenings from your hotel receptionists! Never be afraid to ask for fun/interesting things to do in the city!

5. Unplug for Full Immersion

Put the phone away for 30 minutes. Your brain will thank you!

The Well-Being Travel Checklist

  • One Local Festival or Event
  • Two Community Markets
  • One Workshop or Performance
  • One Hour for Unplanned Fun
  • 30 Minutes Screen-Free

The Big Picture: Travel as a Wellness Upgrade

Your next trip isn’t just a getaway – it’s a proven path to better mental health (studies already showed this). By weaving live events into your itinerary, you’re investing in happiness backed by science.

Because well-being isn’t in a souvenir shop – it’s in the energy of a crowd, the taste of a street snack, and the melody of a night you’ll never forget.
